"Certainly, it was very targeted. It was very focused. Certainly, it was overkill," police said of the shooting. On Sept. 14, 2017, at 2:54 a.m., Anthony Soares, 33, who was close friends with the celebrated rapper Drake, was shot dead in a targeted hit in the lobby of an apartment in Toronto, Canada, on Glamorgan Ave near Kennedy Rd. Toronto police released two videos of the shooting in the hopes of sparking information on the identity of the shooters. Drake posted a photo of Soares on Instagram after the death, calling him one of his “family members” and “our brother.” Drake said: “I still can’t even believe this morning was real. It was a honor to have shared years together and I will always keep your memory alive.”
Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux of Toronto police said the attack on Soares was “very focused” and an “overkill.” He confirmed Soares and Drake were friends and the detective asked the famed rapper to use his influence to draw out information on the killing. “I certainly would encourage him through his tweets to encourage anybody within the community to come forward with regards to any information that they have that may assist in solving his friend’s murder,” he said.
